Smart Technologies in Healthcare
Emerging smart technologies present new opportunities to enhance access, quality, and efficiency of healthcare delivery in Africa. As innovators of digital health solutions, the African Digital Health Research Institute (ADHRI) aims to strategically adopt the following smart technologies:
Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning
AI and ML can analyze large datasets to predict outbreaks, improve diagnostics, optimize supply chains, and support clinical decision-making. ADHRI will develop localized AI tools for providers and virtual assistants to support telemedicine.
Robotic Process Automation
RPA can automate repetitive administrative tasks freeing up staff for more meaningful work. ADHRI will apply RPA to claims processing, prescription dispensing, appointment bookings, and other workflows.
3D Printing
3D printing technology can be used to create customized medical devices, implants, and simulations for surgery preparation. ADHRI will explore 3D printing for prosthetics, orthotics, and medical training.
Remote Surgery Robotics
Tele-operated robotic surgery systems can connect specialized surgeons remotely to operate on patients. ADHRI will evaluate the potential to bring advanced surgical expertise to rural areas through this emerging technology.
IoMT - Internet of Medical Things
ADHRI aims to integrate IoMT devices like smart inhalers, ECGs, glucose monitors, and other connected devices for remote patient monitoring. This can improve chronic disease management.
While adopting new technologies, ADHRI will focus on localization, user-centric design, and integration with existing infrastructure and workflows. Smart healthcare transformation will be gradual, evidence-based, and responsive to patients' needs. Overall, smart technologies will enable ADHRI to make healthcare seamless, predictive, preventive and personalized for the people of Africa.
